- A flannel-like fabric was found from Wales in the 16th
century, so from the beginning, it became popular because of its warmth.
It provided super protection against the chilled and drizzly winters of
Welsh. The softer, warmer, and heavier cloth was produced of subtle and
smooth yarn called the worsted thread. The French used to represent this
cloth as Flanelle, and the German spelled it Flanell.
- In 1869, the flannel fabric showed up in the United
States, and the Industrial Revolution took a speed. Laborers, who had long
and harsh working hours were supplied with the flannel garments because of
its warm material. Soon after that, it also became staple fabric for bed
sheets and other household items.
- In the early 20th century, the flannel fabric got an
image as the cloth of the manual laborers.
- In the early 1990s, popular bands like Pearl Jam and
Nirvana wore flannel cloth. And when the famous person wears such things,
it becomes a trend. All the eager fans soon imitated the fabric, and the
fabric was already on the ramps and magazines.
- Flannel fabric manufacturers created different fashionable materials with the
flannel, and in 2010 the hipster culture became popular. The flannel
fabric reached new heights of coolness.
Today, flannel itself
has so many types like cotton flannel, wool flannel, mixed flannel, which is a
combination of both cotton and wool, baby flannel, diaper flannel, which makes
hundreds of different products.
