FLANNEL-FAVORITE FABRIC FOR ALL

Some say that flannel is originated from a Welsh word “Gwlanen,” meaning “woolen cloth,” and some say it came from an old French word “Flaine” that refers to “a kind of coarse wool.” Flannel fabric is originally produced from carded wool or worsted yarn, and today it could be made from wool, cotton, or synthetic fiber. This cloth is soft, loosely woven, and slightly napped used to make different kinds of garments. Most commonly, it is used to make blankets, bedsheets, sleepwear, and tartan clothing because of its warmth and softness. The smoothness and warmth of this fabric are due to its loosely spun yarn.

THE HISTORY
The flannel fabric was invented in the 17th century in Wales. In the late 1600s, the textile workers started using sheep’s wool excessively by the process of carding to disentangle and soothe the yarn. The softer flannel fabric still retains the toughness of wool. Soon after that the welsh textile mills started distributing the flannel fabric to the farmers, and then to all working people. It was not long after that that the material became accessible for tolerating the country’s cold, rainy, and windy weather. The textile workers soon traded the fabric to England and France.
In 1889, Hamilton Carhartt founded his flannel company, where he provided the top-notch quality of this fabric for the working class. After this, the flannel fabric popularity increased, even the US soldiers wore this fabric in both the World Wars, as an added layer of warmth. After it, a cargo style in flannel was also featured for utility tasks. Also, the soldiers started wearing it as casual wear. The extra pockets and many other designs and manipulations with the flannel increased its popularity, and soon it became the most favorite fabric for all. Today the flannel is one of the most versatile fabrics in terms of styles and utilization.
